Age Checking

As adults and purveyors of cigarettes and alcohol it is our responsibility as adults and retailers to make it as hard as possible for children to buy cigarettes and alcohol, and one way of doing so is age checking for ID with anyone who you feel might not be old enough and in our experience you should think 21. Ask yourself, does this person look 21? This is what is known as Challenge 21, the process of challenging anyone trying to buy cigarettes or alcohol to produce ID, no ID, no cigarettes and no booze.

Age checking is not hard to do, you need to know that your staff are asking anyone who they feel does not look twenty one. It is no good asking yourself if the child looks about sixteen or eighteen for alcohol because many teenagers look older than they are, but how many sixteen year olds look 21. It is better to be safe than sorry. Mystery shoppers which are underage are everywhere as part of the Think 21 initiative and their finding are published which can result in hefty fines and in some cases license revoke. If you ask someone for ID and they produce, you have done your bit.

Answers Investigations use the Think 21 and the Challenge 21 programme to help promote awareness of underage buying of controlled goods such as glue and other intoxicating solvents, cigarettes and alcohol. Answers Investigations are currently work for leading off-licence chains, pub companies, supermarket retailers and other companies selling age related products. The service has been featured in the Morning Advertiser and on the BBC - Answers Investigation receives a lot of media attention, which can be used to a positive PR advantage, especially in regard to the issue of underage drink sales. With our help, a campaign to tackle the issues of underage purchase will create positive PR, benefiting your company and demonstrating your organisation's responsible attitude.
